Pospisil pops the cork at West Liberty finale
by Mike McGuire
WEST LIBERTY, Ia. (August 22, 2020) – The final race of 2020 at West Liberty Raceway, brought the Super Late Model Racing – Hoker Trucking East Series to town for the first time. The inaugural win went to series point leader Tad Pospisil of Norfolk, Nebraska.
Andy Eckrich popped out to the early lead from the outside of the front row. On lap six, Eckrich slowed, allowing Charlie McKenna and Pospisil to go past. McKenna led laps six through twelve, with Pospisil taking control on lap thirteen. Tad would go unchallenged the rest of the way to the checkers.
Andy Eckrich recovered to finish second. Jeff Tharp took third, ahead of Brian Harris in fourth. Jeff Aikey made a late race charge to finish fifth.
Late Model heat race wins went to Aikey, Dave Eckrich, Andy Eckrich, and Chris Simpson. Chad Simpson and Jonathan Brauns won the B-mains. Chad Holladay set the pace in qualifying with a time of 19.107 seconds.
Spencer Diercks continued his recent reign of the Modified ranks, taking the victory in the twenty lap main. Jeff Aikey led lap one of the feature, before the first yellow flag waved. After the restart, Cayden Carter took the lead. After the third restart, seventh place starter Diercks grabbed the lead on lap 14, and led the rest of the way to the checkers. Carter finished second, with Aikey third. Darin Duffy finished fourth, followed by Denny Eckrich.
Logan Anderson won the SportMod feature after starting on the pole. But the victory wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Tim Plummer started ninth and pulled up to second after a lap six restart. Plummer hounded Anderson the rest of the way, but was unable to make the pass for the win. Matt Fulton, Dustin Schram, and Scott Brau rounded out the top five.
Midway through the 4-Stock feature there was a four-way battle for the lead. In the end, it was Cody Staley in victory lane. Tim Long was second. Cody VanDusen, Adam Gates, and Jared McMichael were third through fifth, in that order.
Ray Guss Jr. won both his heat and feature in A.I.R.S. competition. Dennis Etten finished second. Scott Fridley also won a heat and took third. Bruce Yoerger and Dan Kessler completed the top five.
Midwest Jalopies rounded out the show. Scott VanBuskirk took the feature win over Jim Thurston and Jeff Blunt.
DRT TRAK Racing Inc. has two more race events left in 2020. Both are on the quarter-mile oval of the Davenport Speedway. The Night of Destruction with Cheater Races for the stock car classes and the fan favorite Trailer Race, will be September 12th. The final event will be the 27th running of the Iowa Governor’s Cup. That race will also feature the Super Late Model Racing – Hoker Trucking East Series. Modifieds, SportMods, Street Stocks, 4-Stocks, and the American Iron Racing Series will also be competing.
